Born Yesterday

Born Yesterday was a theoretical class project for THEA 545: Costume Design. Born Yesterday by Garson Kanin is proven to be a seminal American comedy that comments on the intersection of politics and the power of feminine persuasion. Having Billie Dawn in strong silhouettes and colors that were indicative of the 1940s, yet also asserting power and independence, was a strong statement conveyed by the costumes. The parallel appearance of political themes and the use of strong silhouettes continues to appear in the wardrobe of the remainder of the characters, e.g., Mrs. Hedges’s appearance in a two piece suit, and highlighting Billie’s appearance in wide-legged trousers as she is liberated near the conclusion of the play.
